  Angus Smith Marine

Angus James Smith founded "Angus Smith Marine" in 1965. His love of fishing provided the respite from his busy public life as Mayor of the city of Townsville, a position he held from 1952 to 1967.

His first outboard was a 1.5hp British Seagull, which he and family used from their beach hut at Cungulla. He saw the future recreational potential of outboard motors and his Marine Retail and service company was formed.

Evinrude motors had established an Australian manufacturing facility in Bankstown, N.S.W. 75hp was the largest outboard in those days. Physically it was as large as the currant 250hp outboards and to own one of these was a real status symbol. The big sellers were the 18hp and 25hp Evinrude models rigged to a 12ft tinnie for estuary fishing, which is abundant in our waters.

Ian Smith, third son of Angus, was keen to learn the business. He spent six years working with Evinrude and Johnson motors.

Beginning on the assembly line and graduating through the ranks of both service and sales representation to become service manager with their New Zealand operations, returning in 1975 to take over the family business. With this background, the company takes pride in providing quality service.

Mr. Robert Crump joined Angus Smith Marine in 1968 and in 1972 moved to Ingham as manager of the new branch. His service background and knowledge gained through the years has been invaluable to the boating community in the Herbert valley.

Mr. Gary Lancashire joined as a junior technician in 1974. Gary has gone on to become one of Australia's premier master technicians. He has been twice honored with the Evinrude and Johnson Master Technician of Australia. He heads a dedicated service team who pride themselves in delivering the highest quality service and total quality on new boat installations. In his words, "There is only one winner with a quality installation... He who pays for it."

B.R.P. (Bombardier Recreational products) lead the world in outboard 2 stroke Technology. Evinrude direct injection technology began being developed Back in the late 1980"s.

B.R.P. continued this development and in 2004 released the "Evinrude E-Tec" range of direct injection 2 stroke outboards. The market was looking for a reliable product that was easy to own, easy to operate, was fuel efficient, quiet and aesthetically pleasing to the eye when Installed to any boat.

 BTB Marine

Chris and Eva Hough started their different careers on different continents: Chris as a fisherman in Queensland and Eva as a graphic designer in Amsterdam. Chris graduated as skipper in 1991 and went to work in fishing. Later he moved on to marine construction and cargo, ending in Hervey Bay as the skipper of a tourist boat.

Eva specialized in packaging design & brand positioning. She started her own business ‘thinkfish’ in 1999 to be able to explore, next to her freelance design- and art direction jobs, other areas like illustration. Because of her love for the sea and her longing to be out there, she went to a Dutch maritime college in 2001. Working as chief mate on cargo ships, she made multiple trips throughout Europe, North Africa and into the Black Sea.

In 2006 they met here in Australia and soon decided to start BtB marine. For a short while in 2007 they went back to Europe where Chris worked as the master of an oil-rig supply boat and Eva as freelance designer.

Returning to Hervey Bay they moved into their brand new BtB marine factory and are looking forward to the future.

Some of BTB's services include CNC or ‘Computer Numerical Control’ cutting & routing has been around since the seventies and has come into it’s own with the computer generation.

DIY boat kits is a concept that has taken off in recent years and has been helped along by the constant development of MIG welders.

BtB marine has a fully functional fabrication workshop with an eye towards realistic priced customization. One of the things we pride ourselves on at BtB marine is management: from the day-to-day running of our company to the day-to-day running of your marine operation.   Cresta

Established in 1965 Cresta enjoyed early success as producers of very safe, robust and reliable motor yachts.  When prospective customers thought Cresta they thought “Quality, Comfort, Workmanship and Dependability”.

Ron Robinson built the first Cresta 32 in 1965.  Many followed, the most famous being “Karma” the Channel 7 “Eyewitness News” vessel of the late 1980’s.  Karma also distinguished itself as an east coast heavy tackle game boat skippered by a numerous sports fishing identities.

The Cresta 46 was one of two iconic Australian motor yacht brands of the 1980’s and many fine examples of this vessel still exist.  Cresta evoked tremendous customer loyalty and its current and previous owners will always utter praise about the vessel and the brand.

When you meet Bruce Cunningham – founder of Cunningham’s Marine, you’ll find out that he’s just as comfortable helping a customer with a decision about a $5,000 tinnie as he is running a multi-million dollar operation.

“We’re all about serving all of the normal Queensland boaties,” Bruce explains. “It doesn’t matter if you want to re-power your 12 footer, or take a test drive in new Cobalt; we’re here to help you.”

Featuring over 7000 square metres of outdoor and undercover showroom space as well as a full marine chandlery store, Cunningham has identified and improved aspects of the boating business that need to be brought up to scratch.

As well as a massive service section with drive-in access, there’s ample on and off-street customer parking, room for a huge number of boats on-site and even a coffee shop to complete the experience.

When asked how many boats the new yard would hold, Bruce answered honestly. “I’ve got no idea … 200 maybe?” And checking the site out, that may be an under-estimate. 250 is more like it.

HISTORY
Talking with Bruce about his business, it’s obvious that he’s met every challenge thrown at him so far. Originally a motorcycle mechanic, Bruce’s first yard was in Ingham, north Queensland. The Chrysler dealership quickly picked up Suzuki and Marine and became Ingham Motorcycles and Marine.

Moving to Brisbane in 1989, he purchased Margate Motors and Marine in Oxley Avenue.

“There wasn’t much boat stock there, and the place also sold lawnmowers as well as the original Tohatsu and Allycraft franchise,” Bruce said. “In fact, we were the very first Allycraft dealer – anywhere!”

In 1994, Cunningham picked up the Allison Boats and Mercury brands. Subsequently, they’ve won awards for Dealer of the Year for Queensland and for the Australia/South Pacific area. “Not bad for a dealership that the other local dealers gave six months until we were out of business,” he smiled.

In 2001 Cunningham’s picked up Trailcraft, in 2002 Polycraft and in 2005 the imported SeaSwirl Boats, starting a relationship with marine giant Genmar that yielded Stratos and Glastron in 2006. The luxury, imported Cobalt boats are the latest brand available at the dealership. Brooker is the latest addition to the aluminium craft line up.

RIGHT HAND MAN
Ian Cunningham , Bruce’s younger brother, has been with Bruce for nearly all of the time the business has been growing. Starting as Bruce’s 15-year-old apprentice mechanic, Ian is the Operations Manager at Cunningham’s Marine.

And if we thought Bruce was hard to identify as the business leader, Ian is even harder. We had to drag him away from delivery of a tiny tinnie to get his pic taken!

MOTIVATIONS
You’d think that Cunningham’s success was born of a deep love of power boating, but it’s not that at all.   “I actually like dealing with the boating public,” Bruce explained. “The boating industry and its customers must be the best people in the world to deal with.” When you think about it, your local boat dealer is ALWAYS going to be more popular than the local parking inspector, policeman or tax collector.

 Custom Ski Boats

Custom Ski Boats are manufactured by the Managing Director, Brad Hohn. Having been in the industry for a total of more than 12 years a broad diversity of experience has been contributed to the design & manufacture of these boats. Currently our manufacturing facilities enable us to build up to 50 boats annually, however plan for expansion are a not too distant reality.

Selling your boat can be stressful. Firstly you must correctly choose the right Broker, one who is going to honestly appraise and market your most treasured nautical possession. Next there is the Buyer keen to get a bargain at your expense. Then there are the Sea Trial and Survey Inspection which generally bring to light a number of defects for which the Buyer wants a further discount on your already rock bottom agreed contract price. As a result, the deal is most likely to stall, adding further anxiety to your life.

As our name BOATING SERVICES implies, we are prepared to guide you through this possible minefield to bring about a smooth transition between Vendor and Buyer.

The SBS Proposal
On receiving your telephone call, we will arrange a suitable time to discuss your requirements, marketing strategy and all necessary documentation relating to the sale of the vessel. It is preferable for this to be done during the initial inspection of the vessel.

If you exclusively list your vessel with SBS for a period of 90 days…
Your vessel will be appraised and you will receive a written report by SBS Manager Don Lees, Professional Shipwright and Marine Surveyor. Visual defects or suggestions to enhance the sale will be discussed for your consideration. It is important to rectify or declare defect items as it is most probable these will be found when the vessel is again inspected by the intending Buyer's Surveyor.

During the exclusive listing period your vessel will be displayed on SBS, YachtHub.com Boatpoint & our Delaer Network web sites. Every month of the listing term you will receive a monthly activity statement on enquiry information followed by Broker / Client discussions to enable adjustment in advertising material and listing price.

It is available in three models: The Sport 240, Vacationer Outboard and the exciting new Turbo Diesel Vacationer Inboard:  From cruising and fishing to waterskiing and wakeboarding there’s one to suit nearly every boating enthusiast’s special needs.

Southbeach boats are approved to carry up to 12 adults while their practical layout allows them to comfortably sleep up to four adults. Their extremely spacious deck layouts are perfect for entertaining family and friends. Luxuries include a 2 burner gas cooktop & BBQ, provision for two cooler boxes or a portable refrigerator, a fresh water shower, toilet/change room, DVD and ac four speaker sound system.

With a wide, flared bow and generous freeboard, Southbeach occupants enjoy a very dry ride in all but the most punishing conditions.

Each model is designed to meet survey standards, so they are also suitable for use as tenders, water taxis, hire boats, for snorkelling, scuba diving, ferrying passengers from ship to shore and for inter-island resort transfers.

Importantly, Southbeach boats are designed and built in Australia. All models meet Australia’s legal towing width of 2.5 metres.
